So what's been happening, you ask? I have a lot I'd love to talk about, but I'll keep this one short and fairly simple — plenty more episodes to come for all the other topics on my list.

A little about me

This is the first episode, so let me start with a bit about myself and the shop, and a teaser of what's to come.

I'm technically retired, but as my wife likes to say: "He's still working — just not for someone else." And that is so true. I've been the busiest I've ever been since my so-called retirement. All the to-dos that sat on the "someday" list suddenly became priorities, and I've worked through most of them. The biggest was a full renovation of our basement — new walls, tons of electrical work, tile floor removal, the list goes on. The end result was amazing, and for me it was validation: I can do it, and do it well.

That leads into one of my philosophies. Do it, and do it right — but don't be afraid to learn. The best craftsmen out there had to start somewhere, and they didn't get good at their craft overnight. It's OK to make mistakes; identify them and correct them, no matter how many tries it takes. That's how you learn.

That relates completely to how I build my tools and products. I don't think there's a single item I've produced that hasn't gone through a number of revisions — whether to fix an issue or to make an improvement I spotted along the way. That might mean some of my products are a bit over-engineered. But better over-engineered than under-engineered.
More of my history in later episodes — for now, back to the drawing board.

🔥 The chaos of getting here

The name of this newsletter turned out to be prophetic. Even getting it up and running was truly a matter of accuracy and chaos. What should have been an afternoon project turned into a genuine all-nighter — every status light on my website glowing green while emails silently refused to send, until 4:30 AM when I finally found the culprit buried deep in the database and rebuilt forty-one tables by hand.
The first thing this newsletter ever documented was its own difficult birth. I couldn't have scripted a better proof of the name.

⚙️ From the Bench

The hand span measuring tool is done — fully baked and production-ready. I'm printing inventory this coming week, with updated photos soon and availability in the shop within a couple of weeks. Bulletin readers heard it here first.
On the drawing board: two versions of a pitch gauge — one simple and already working, and one more ambitious where I'm still hunting for the right spring mechanism. More on that hunt next episode.
Peace out, and catch you on the dark side. (Pink Floyd is my all-time favorite band, so I had to work in some sort of reference. Hopefully you get it.)

Crafted with accuracy. Fueled by curiosity.
