This is the first episode, so let me start with a bit about myself and the shop, and a teaser of what's to come.

I'm technically retired, but as my wife likes to say: "He's still working — just not for someone else." And that is so true. I've been the busiest I've ever been since my so-called retirement. All the to-dos that sat on the "someday" list suddenly became priorities, and I've worked through most of them. The biggest was a full renovation of our basement — new walls, tons of electrical work, tile floor removal, the list goes on. The end result was amazing, and for me it was validation: I can do it, and do it well.

That leads into one of my philosophies. Do it, and do it right — but don't be afraid to learn. The best craftsmen out there had to start somewhere, and they didn't get good at their craft overnight. It's OK to make mistakes; identify them and correct them, no matter how many tries it takes. That's how you learn.

That relates completely to how I build my tools and products. I don't think there's a single item I've produced that hasn't gone through a number of revisions — whether to fix an issue or to make an improvement I spotted along the way. That might mean some of my products are a bit over-engineered. But better over-engineered than under-engineered.

More of my history in later episodes — for now, back to the drawing board.
